About Us

Awake Village Interest in Dance – or AVID as it is locally and affectionately known – is a community based organisation which aims to increase involvement in folk dancing and playing. It is very successful.

We are based in North Lincolnshire which means the area bounded by the River Trent on the east; the suburbs of Doncaster on the west; and the M180 motorway to the north and the A631 to Gainsborough in the south. This gives us about 20 villages where we hold dances.

We are different from many other dance clubs in that we run ‘session’ ceilidhs in different villages each month.

The dances are very informal. There is:

No band booked. Instead anyone who wants to play can do so.

No amplification. This means that the dance is ready to organise and no-one is daunted by a PA.

An emphasis on having fun.

The dances are normally held on the second Wednesday evening of each month (the only exception being a move to the second Tuesday if a hall is not available). The dances run from 8pm to 10.45pm which gives us time for about 10-12 dances and a finishing time to accommodate those with jobs the next day.

We attract dancers, musicians and callers of all levels of experience and everyone is welcomed and encouraged. Since 1999 when AVID started (and 1993 when its predecessor organisation the West Stockwith DIY Ceilidhs started) we have regularly attracted about 30 people to each dance, and in that time many dancers, musicians and callers have become proficient from relative inexperience – and in some cases, no experience.

We have also published two dance tune books and a calling instructional book.

There is no membership and no commitment; only an invitation to have fun with us. Why not come along and join in?
